HISTORY

Throughout the years, New Milford has shown a good sense of knowing when to incorporate change for the better … and when to preserve that which should never change.

New Milford was first settled in 1707, and incorporated in 1712. Since those colonial times, its downtown area has served as a regional trading center for the outlying towns of the Litchfield Hills.  And while those surrounding communities have clung to their rural roots, New Milford has always worked to integrate industry and technology into a diverse, dynamic commercial base.

This was facilitated by the completion of the Housatonic Bridge in 1837, followed by the introduction of rail service in 1840.  New Milford’s easy access to major markets and resources has attracted major corporations such as Nestle and Kimberly-Clark.

As we approach the 21st Century, New Milford is poised for continued prosperity.  Close to urban centers, yet far enough away to retain its small-town charm.  Receptive to growth, yet committed to preserving its unique heritage.  Business oriented … and people-oriented too!

Things have changed … but New Milford is still the same in many ways.

And it’s those ways that make such a wonderful difference to the people who live here.

We still enjoy our small town atmosphere, and I hope we keep that! There’s our lovely town green; and the good, positive changes we’ve made to its nearby downtown area have already helped our merchants.
