EDUCATION

New Milford Schools at the forefront of 21st century educational innovations.

Connecticut’s public education system ranks consistently at the top of national surveys – and the greater New Milford area boasts some of the state’s most highly-rated public school systems.

Each community within the greater New Milford area shares the same lofty goal of helping every child achieve academic excellence, at every level and every age. Region 12’s Shepaug Valley High School, for example, serving Bridgewater, Roxbury and Washington, has been previously named a national blue ribbon school for its academic excellence.

The region is also home to many of the nation’s most prestigious private schools, as well. The Canterbury School is right in New Milford, as is the Connecticut Conservatory of the Performing Arts; Washington boasts the Devereux-Glenholme School , Rumsey Hall and The Gunnery. In Kent, there are South Kent School and Kent School.

To ensure that its graduates continue to possess the tools needed to become a productive part of the work force, New Milford has regularly invested in updates to its school infrastructure. Recent projects includes a new high school with capacity for 1,600 students; and the renovation of the prior high school as a new middle school.

Exposure to “real-world” skills is also a high priority. In New Milford, for example, high school students learn career opportunities by “shadowing” adults in various professions during their workday. This program has enjoyed enormous success with both students and involved business leaders; it has also won numerous civic and academic awards. A full slate of extra-curricular activities is also offered, from theater and music to sports, to complement academic offerings – and to give students a chance to challenge themselves outside the classroom.

Post-Secondary & Adult Education

At all levels, education is encouraged as the route to personal growth and prosperity. Evening programs through Naugatuck Valley Community College and Northwestern Connecticut Community College are offered in the New Milford schools for adults seeking to enrich their personal and professional lives. Just twenty minutes down the road in Danbury lies Western Connecticut State University, offering a highly-rated, broad-range curriculum at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The colleges and universities of New Haven, Hartford, Waterbury, Fairfield, and Bridgeport are within an hour’s commute. New York City, with its post-graduate and professional enrichment offerings, is only an hour and a half away.
