7/27/2015 - Tips for Staying Safe in Summer Heat
With temperatures expected to be in the mid-nineties this week, Mayor Patricia Murphy would like to remind everyone to take precaution during these high temperatures when working or going outside.

The hot temperatures and extreme humidity can create a dangerous situation in which heat related illnesses are likely.  Some tips to avoid heat related illnesses: if it’s necessary to work/exercise outdoors, try to do so during the early morning or evening hours; drink plenty of fluids; take frequent breaks in a shaded or cool location; dress for comfort in loose breathable, light colored clothing; avoid excessive periods of time in the sun.

Senior citizens may go to the Senior Center to seek relief from the heat during normal business hours, 8 AM to 4 PM, Monday through Friday. The Senior Center is located at 40 Main Street, New Milford.  Other residents may wish to visit the library, movie theater, a museum or do some indoor shopping at a location with air conditioning.  If you choose to be outside, please seek a shaded park or area of the beach.

Please check on vulnerable family, friends and neighbors.  Do not leave your pets outside for extended periods of time, be sure your pets have plenty of water to drink.  Never leave children or pets alone in a closed vehicle, even a few open windows will not keep the vehicle cool enough.

Common signs of heat stroke are a high fever (104°F or higher), severe headache, dizziness and feeling light-headed, muscle weakness or cramps, nausea and vomiting. Anyone who has been exposed to the heat for prolonged periods and is feeling ill should immediately seek medical assistance or call 911.
