2/12/2015 - Winter Sidewalk Maintenance

As the winter weather continues, please be reminded that it is the responsibility of the property owner with an abutting sidewalk, to ensure that the sidewalk is cleared of snow and ice.

Local ordinances require that this be done within 24 hours after the conclusion of a storm.  If the snow or ice cannot be entirely cleared, a reasonable passage for pedestrians must be made, and the remaining surface should be sprinkled with sufficient sand, salt or ashes to allow for safe passage by pedestrians.

Failure to take proper measures to clear the sidewalks in front of your land, building, or adjoining premises can result in fines and even liens placed against your property.  Residents and visitors are encouraged to review the local ordinances that are related to snow and winter weather clean-up.  All ordinances are available for review in the Town Clerk’s Office or can be viewed here.
