New Milford's Village Center

"Where New England Begins "

New Milford's beautiful Village Center is the focal point for community services, dining, entertainment and commerce. The Town is known as the "Gateway to Litchfield County", but as you drive across Veterans Bridge from busy Connecticut Route 7 and enter the Village Center, you get the distinct feeling that this is "where New England begins".

You initially encounter the beautifully restored brick office building at 30 Bridge Street, the handsomely renovated Heritage Inn, the classicly preserved Clifford Chapin railroad station and a host of restaurants and stores on Railroad Street. Moving further along Bridge Street, you come upon the old post office (now home to the Parks & Recreation Office) and then you spy the tip of Connecticut's longest town green. Turning left onto Main Street and moving north along the green, you are sandwiched by the nostalgic bandstand on the South Green and the Town Hall (the site of the former residence of colonial Governor Roger Sherman). As you pass Town Hall, you glance left, down Bank Street, and your eye is captured by what appears to be a movie sound stage depicting an American downtown of yesteryear ... but it is not yesteryear ... it is alive with restaurants, boutique shops and a thriving three screen movie theater. Continuing north along Main Street, you pass the Village Center for the Arts, the Town Library, classic New England Churches, and numerous vintage homes now converted to office buildings. The Southbound side of Main Street hosts several banks, more stores and restaurants and the current Post Office. At the top of the green, you will find the New Milford Historical Society and catch a glimpse of the New Milford Hospital campus just off the Village Center. Government, spiritual refuge, business, healthcare, dining and entertainment all clustered around a quintissential New England Green. It's why our regular visitors tell us, "This is where New England begins!"

Parking in our Village Center is free and plentiful. For most visitors the available on street parking is sufficient, although it is limited to three hours at one time. For those wishing to park for more than three hours, there are several municipal lots affording free parking without hourly limitation, located on Church Street and Patriots Way.
