SIDEWALKS:
Please be reminded that it is the responsibility of the property owner with an abutting sidewalk, to ensure that the sidewalk is cleared of snow and ice.
Local ordinances require that this be done within 24 hours after the conclusion of a storm. If the snow or ice cannot be entirely cleared, a reasonable passage for pedestrians must be made, and the remaining surface should be sprinkled with sufficient sand, salt or ashes to allow for safe passage by pedestrians.
Failure to take proper measures to clear the sidewalks in front of your land, building, or adjoining premises can result in fines and even liens placed against your property.
SNOW EMERGENCY ROUTES AND PARKING BAN
The Town has designated certain roads as SNOW EMERGENCY ROUTES. Please look for the signage (red & white) indicating which roads are selected. Snow Emergencies will be declared in advance of any parking restrictions being imposed (per the signage on each street). Snow Emergencies will be announced via radio, TV and the New Milford website (newmilford.org). The town has designated the lot by Tommy’s Cleaners as free downtown overnight parking during any parking ban restrictions (blue & white sign with snowflake) as well as behind Town Hall (look for signs) and Patriot’s Way lot.
Take your time. Allow extra time to reach your destination. Traveling during the winter months may take up to twice as long as the normal driving time. Plan accordingly and DRIVE SAFELY.
MAILBOXES AND RIGHT OF WAY
Mailboxes should be in good repair before the start of the winter season. The Highway Department will only be responsible for damage done physically from the snowplow and not from the snow coming off of the plow. The Federal requirements and instructions on where and how to place your mailbox is available from the Post Office or Public Works. Mailboxes will be evaluated before the season begins to note any in disrepair that might become a potential hazard for the route driver. YOU CAN HELP by inspecting your mailbox before the first flake falls.
Anything located in the Town’s ROW should be removed before the first snow fall. This includes any sports equipment (portable basketball hoops, goals, nets etc) leaves, vehicles and any other items not allowed in the ROW. The Town of New Milford is not responsible for any damage from flying snow or plows resulting from unlawful items being in the Right of Way. Any or all of these items require a ROW use permit from the Engineering Department to be in compliance.
SAND AND SALT PILE
Is provided for the personal use of New Milford Residents only, and is required to be taken in a few buckets. YOU CAN HELP by being considerate of your neighbors and using only what is necessary for your personal driveways and sidewalks.
The sand pile is located in front of the Public Works Department on Young’s Field Rd.
